Creepy Crawlies

Hi all, today I have a bit of creepy crawly upcycling for you.  This is my piece for this week's Our Creative Corner challenge, brought to us again this week by Kim Price.  Kim is challenging us to be green this week, that's right, recycle/upcycle and be sure to include the color green too.  Well, I must admit that upcycling isn't a challenge for me.  I save every bit of acrylic packaging and usable chipboard that I can get my hands on and use the stuff frequently in my art.  That's what I have repurposed for this piece.  The spooky tree and the crawly frame are chipboard sheets from the lace packaging that I sell in my shop and the embossed window is packaging from one of the Tim Holtz BIGZ dies.

I spent quite a bit of time on this piece, but it was fun and relaxing time for me.  I first cut the acrylic packaging  with the Vintage Cabinet Card die and ran it through a Stampin' Up! spider web embossing folder.  I applied pitch black alcohol ink with an ink applicator tool but it came out too black.  I wanted to have a window effect with the floral pattern showing through so I added some Alcohol Blending Solution to the applicator and went over it a couple of times to lighten it up and make it more transparent.  But the spider web didn't show up as much as I hoped so I took a black Sharpie and filled in the lines on the back side.  The frame was cut from chip board using both the Vintage Cabinet Card die and the Mini M&S Cabinet Card Die.  After that I applied two layers of silver embossing and while the embossing was still hot and melted, pressed the little spider stamp from Mini Halloween 3 into it.  If you ink your stamp with embossing ink first, it makes a nice impression in the hot EP and doesn't stick.

The tree was painted with Black Soot Distress Crackle Paint and the background was done with Black Soot distress stain and Perfect Pearls powder technique that Anita Houston demonstrated in this video.  The cardstock I used was Ranger's Manila CS which is coated and works fabulous for this technique.  I really love the way it looks with Black Soot Distress Stain and Pewter Perfect Pearls.  It's hard to see but for this piece, it gives the impression of swirling dark clouds with moonlight shinning through.  I made a fence with the black jute mesh from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and dry brushed a little Silver Acrylic paint dabber over it for more moonlight sheen.

My pop of green is my mini rosette sponged with Peeled Paint DI  and stamped in Ranger Jet Black Archival Ink with the web stamp from Mini Halloween 3 and of course the edges were sponged with Vintage Photo DI.

I love Halloween art and was really pleased with how this came out!

Hope you will stop over to Our Creative Corner to see the great inspiration pieces the teamies over there have to share!

Using that stamping into hot EP, I foresee some REALLY cool tombstone ideas in upcoming Halloween cards! If I may borrow the phrase from Anita, "Holy Halloweeny Cow!!!" I think that pretty much sums it up. :)
As for the carpet...soooooo worth it! This creation put me in the most festive mood for the upcoming holiday. Thanks Linda!

Hi Linda. Your project is FABULOUS! All that repurposed creepy crawly stuff is absolutely brilliant. It seems we might all have a little bit of "hippie" in us since this challenge just brought out the best in the team. I just love the embossed spider web packaging - great idea.

Linda, I really love how you created the window frame. So clever and creative! You always make the most exciting and delightful paper crafts, and thank you for sharing your process, too. I always learn something new and creative whenever I visit here (smile).
I also think its cute that we all have our own collection of materials that we just can't part with!
