Can Canvas be Spooky?

The Funkie team is rockin' with canvas this week over at Frilly and Funkie.  Did you see the wonderful work the Frillies did over there last week?  Well, be sure to stop by and see what the Funkies have to inspire you to Get Crafty With Canvas.  Last week I made a romantic tag with canvas roses, this week I decided to grunge it up and had a blast making my first Halloween make of the season.

I am also entering this into Linda Ledbetter's Compendium of Curiosities 2 challenge, the theme of which this time is Creative Core'dinations, page 61 of CC2.  This week's CC2 challenge is sponsored by that great craft superstore Simon Says Stamp.

I started with Anita Houston's awesome Friday Focus tutorial on using Perfect Pearls powders (on sale this week 15% off) with Distress Stains.  For this one I used Black Soot DS and Pewter Perfect Pearls.  If you haven't seen the video tutorial Anita did last week, check it out here.  Here's my tag base after using that technique.
I love the way it turned out and it's perfect for this tag.  I wanted to show it to you before I covered most of it up with other layers.  After creating this base on a jumbo manila tag, I embossed a piece of orange ColorCore Cardstock (Tim Holtz's Core'dinations in Adirondack colors) with an SU spiderweb embossing flolder and then sanded the high spots, then sponging them with Vintage Photo DI.  Before gluing it down, I embossed images from the Mini Halloween 3 stamp set in silver, including spiders, webs and Happy Halloween.  Then it was overlaid with some really cool burlap wide grid mesh that I was able to snag for the boutique.  I thought it added another nice spooky layer.

For my canvas, I merely cut 3 squares and smeared a little Black Soot distress stain over them.  The DS sits on top initially, but I misted it with water and created a lovely puddle of soupy black ink on them.  The excess was blotted off and I frayed the edges a bit.  I then glued some canvas to chipboard and when dry cut BOO with my Word Play die and colored them by rubbing them on a pad of Rusty Hinge and Barn Door for an nice blend of orange, again misting them to release the color and let it soak in.  I also smeared a little Black Soot around the edges to grunge them up a bit.

Using my new Mini Bat and Skull movers and shapers dies, I cut the skull from chipboard and painted on Picket Fence Distress Crackle Paint and cut the bats from Tim's Kraft-Core Core'dinations, again sanding it with my sanding grip before removing it from the piece of CS it was cut from.
To finish it off, I added a piece of orange twine that I grunged up a bit along with a little spider web charm I created with Ranger Metal Foil Tape.  Affixing a small piece of the foil tape to CS, I cut it with a Spellbinders die and ran it though the spider web embossing folder.  Then it was painted with a Pitch Black paint dabber and allowed to dry.  Once dry, I very lightly sanded off the high spots to let the silver show through - I actually rubbed some of it off with my fingernail rather than sand it too hard and go through the tape.  Then I gave it a nice coat of Glossy Accents to give it a plastic charm feel.
Whew, for a "simple" tag, this was a lot of work.  But I was also a lot of fun - I love grungy, vintage Halloween art.  Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely comments.  Let me know if you have any questions about any of these steps.

Hope you will stop by Frilly and Funkie to see what the other designers have to offer.  Lots of fun stuff over there!

These products were all used to make this tag and are available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.
