A Christmas Wish

Double click any photo to zoom in for details

Hello, I'm back today with a card I made for my weekly DT spot over on the Artistic Outpost blog.  It was made using the Christmas Chalk stamp set.  I decided to combine chalkboard style with rustic.  I grabbed a sheet of corrugated cardboard and cut it to 5x5", then used scissors to distress the edges.  I dry brushed the cardboard with gesso and sponged the edges with Vintage Photo distress ink. The sentiment was stamped on black card stock with white pigment ink, dried it with my heat tool and die cut it with a tiny postage stamp die from the new Tim Holtz Thinlits Labels set.  The snowman was stamped twice, fussy cut and one was popped up with craft foam for dimension.  The 25th was also cut with a die from the Labels set.  My snowflakes were cut from white corrugated cardboard with the new Stacked Snowflake die.  The card shell was stamped with the snowflakes from the Snowy Woods set with Frayed Burlap.

Thanks so much for stopping by.  That's it for Artistic Outpost this week.  I hope you will be inspired to Show Us Your Art with the Artistic Outpost monthly challenge.  You have all month and the challenge theme is Anything Goes.

These supplies were used to create the card above.  They are available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique where Ranger/Tim Holtz and most other name brand products are always 20% below MSRP.

Christmas is Coming!

Hello and welcome to Frilly Wednesday!  It's a new challenge this week over at Frilly and Funkie.  Our shabby chic extraordinaire, Nancy Dyes, is our hosts for this fortnight and her challenge is to finish up our Christmas preparation by making a vintage-themed holiday card.  Easy peasy, right?  Well, my cards and tags are never really easy peasy.  I struggled for an entire evening to make this simple little tag.   It was one of those that just didn't want to come together.  I fiddled and I fussed, I moved things around, I rejected elements and added things at the last minute, until I ran out of time.  I am fairly satisfied and I have to say that the real life one is much prettier.  After fussing and fiddling all night long, I then couldn't seem to get a decent photo of it.  I did take this one in natural light this morning but it still isn't the best.  I so envy people who have amazing photographs of their work on their blogs!

At any rate, I started with my normal jumbo manila tag from The Funkie Junkie Boutique, embossed it with an older Tim Holtz texture fade and then sponged it with Vintage Photo.  Nope, didn't like that so much so I decided I was going for glittered white.  I brushed the entire tag with gesso and sprinkled on Clear Rock Candy glitter while it was wet - it adhered nicely :)  Once dry, it was edged with Walnut Stain.

I've had this wonderful vintage tag that I downloaded from Lilac & Lavender awhile back and have been wanting to use.  If you love vintage images, Megan Berry over at Lilac & Lavender has some awesome freebies.  (Thanks, Megan!)  But what to use with it?  I seem to be stuck on gold right now and started having visions of vintage gold.  I cut the two smaller poinsettias from the TH Tattered Poinsettia die (such a shame that one has been retired!) and embossed them with the coordinating texture fade.  Plus I did an extra one of the larger poinsettia for the green leaf bottom.  They were sprayed with Tarnished Brass distress spray stain.  I had originally blended on Pine Needles DI on the leaf layer and the flourishes, but they looked so aqua that I went back over them with Mowed Lawn to green them up a bit.

The heart was a left over from a project last year and I rubbed a bit of the Tarnished Brass spray around the edge with my finger.  The flourishes were cut with the Festive Greenery decorative strip die.  I dug some wonderful old gold flecked rick rack out of my stash for the bottom border.
I die cut the '25' and the holly leaves and heat embossed them with Queen's Gold EP but the '25' just didn't look right with the holly leaves sticking out so I decided on making a gold 'seal' with the new Thinlits labels dies and heat embossed it with Queen's Gold EP too.  Then I took a bunch of the tiny acrylic accents from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and painted them with Gold Alcohol Ink Mixative.  I love the flat gold look it gives, rather than shiny.  It looks so vintage!  I finished it off with a snippet of red and white pinstriped ribbon that I pulled out of my stash.

Well, it took almost four hours but I was finally happy with my little vintage style Christmas tag.  I hope you can whip up something vintage and holiday-ish for our challenge.  Do be sure to stop by Frilly and Funkie to see the other beautiful pieces by the rest of the design team.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas - Funkie Junkie Style - Week #10

Double click photo to zoom in for details
Welcome friends and followers!  I hope all my American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving - I did.  Had a lovely day with my mom and dad, brother, daughter and DH.  Our weather has been chilly but dry and sunny - totally a blessing.  And welcome to December and tag #10 of the 12 Tags of Christmas Funkie Junkie Style!  Yes, that's right - it's December and Christmas is officially upon us.  Yesterday I cleared alway all my fall decorations and put up Christmas decorations all around my house  - everything but the tree.  We don't get our tree until about one week before Christmas.

If you are new to my 12 Tags of Christmas challenge and want to play along, you can find all the challenge details and requirements in the Week #1 post.  At the end of the 12 weeks, I'm doing a drawing from the participants and giving away three gift certificates to The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  Plus everyone who properly completes the challenge will receive a 10% off shopping coupon.  There is still time.  You just need to link up 12 tags, cards or other artwork by December 21st.

I finished another Christmas tag for your inspiration.  Thank you so much to everyone who is playing along and a special welcome to the new players this week!  I have another style that  I played with this week.  You might recall that I mentioned how much fun I have trying so many different styles with my tags.  A couple of weeks ago, it was homespun.  Last week it was black and gold elegant and this week it's a little on the grungy side.  I have to say that I am totally captivated by Astrid McLean's work with texture paste and spray inks.  If you haven't visited her blog, Astrid's Artistic Efforts, you should!  Every time I go there, there is more amazing artwork to ogle!

I wanted to try something along that line so I selected a pretty filigree stencil from Prima and grabbed my Ranger embossing paste.  But first, I stenciled the Tim Holtz Holly Bough stencil on the entire tag with Pine Needles distress ink.  Then I stenciled on the embossing paste and let it thoroughly dry.  I got out some spray stains and lightly misted it.  I don't even remember exactly which ones I used, but I know I started with Tarnished Brass over the entire tag.   I added a few squirts of Vintage Photo  and there may have been a quick pump or two of Walnut Stain in the texture paste area.

I cut a heart out of chipboard (didn't have a die the right size/shape) and gave it two coats of Wendy Veechi's Red Geranium embossing powder and while it was still hot, I inked up Tim Holtz's Fabulous Flourishes stamp with gold ink and stamped into the hot EP.  I embellished the tag with a piece of the Trellis die cut, embossed with Queen's Gold EP as well as the holly from Holiday Greens likewise embossed.  The gumdrops from The Funkie Junkie Boutique (not Tim's, mine are a little smaller) were colorized with Red Pepper alcohol ink. The sentiment panel was gold embossed on vellum.
That's it for week 10.  Have you thought about planing along.  You can be inspired by anyting or everything from my week's tag.  Thanks again for stopping by!
