Halloween Hip to be Square

Double click for close up details
Hi everyone, I'm back today with a ton of fun!  This is my first ever project using the Eileen Hull ScoreBoards XL die - 3D Cube.  It makes three sizes of these cute little cubes 2.5", 2" and 1.5".  I made this for the new challenge over at Frilly and Funkie - Jenny's Hip to be Square challenge. It's a special challenge for us because we are joining in with other challenge blogs - The Artists on the Block and Eileen Hull's Art With a Heart challenge.

For this challenge, we want you to create a 3D vintage project based on a cube shape. The Design Team have used Artist Trading Block cubes (available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique and discounted an extra 15% during this challenge period. That's a $39.99 die on sale for just $27.19.) but let's be clear, you can use your own templates, dies or hand cut cubes if you would prefer. Decorate, embellish and alter them in any way you choose as long as they are cube shaped and have a vintage feel.

As an added bonus this fortnight we are teaming up with our friends at 'The Artists on the Block'. They have a dedicated Design Team using Eileen Hull Designs cubes (and many other 3D die cut shapes) in incredibly imaginative ways so make sure you take a look for some added inspiration. And with their companion challenge blog 'Art With Heart' having an 'Anything Goes' theme this month. You've got the option to enter your creations there as well to be in with a chance to win a brand new Eileen Hull Designs die!

I started my project by cutting the three cubes from good solid gray chipboard.  Then I cut squares of white card stock in the three sizes of the blocks to cover the chipboard.  Using Wendy Vecchi stencils Checkmate and Yipes strips and Wendy's black embossing paste, I stenciled the bottom two cubes.  I used the Prima Flourish stencil (which, BTW is back in stock in the boutique:)  When they were completely dry, I carefully adhered them to the sides of the cubes.

I found some vintage Halloween images on line and resized them to fit, then printed them out on card stock.  The edges of everything were lightly sponged with Vintage Photo DI because I can't stand too white colors in vintage work.

The decorative band around the middle cube was a strip of white CS cut with an old Martha Stewart border punch, then stamped with the tiny spider from Tim Holtz's Mini Halloween 3 set.  Then it was edged with Black Soot distress glitter.  The banner was stamped with an Artistic Outpost stamp and cut by hand.
I created a gothic looking flower by stamping white CS with the script stamp from the Mini Halloween 3 set and edged it with both Black Soot and Vintage Photo DI, then misted it with Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls.  I created an epoxy type button with the spider stamp and Glossy Accents which was used for the center of the flower.  The "greenery" was cut from black CS with the Spring Greenery strip die and covered with Black Soot distress glitter - LOVE that stuff!

I used some bronze box feet that I sell in the store for the feet.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to put them on it or not, but I'm glad I did.  I painted them black with Vintaj patina paints.

I had so much fun creating this project.  I was a little challenged at first working with such a small "canvas" but once I got going on it, I had a blast putting it together.  I hope you enjoyed seeing it.  Please do be sure to check out the other creations by our Frillies this week at Frilly and Funkie and be sure to come back next week to see what the Funkies have been up to!

These products were used to make the above project and are available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, where Tim Holtz, Wendy Vecchi and most other name brand products are always 20% under MSRP.

I love this Halloween tower! I'm doubly impressed to read that you stenciled the designs on the blocks instead of using patterened paper! It's just fabulous!!!!
