Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas - Funkie Junkie Style - Week #11

Hello friends and welcome to my new followers!  So happy to have you back visiting to see what my Tag No. 11 is like.  Thanks so much to all of you who are being inspired by my tags and linking up your projects.  A warm welcome to the new players too.  If you are new to my blog and this challenge, you can find all the challenge details in my week #1 post.  If you really hustle there is still time to play along and finish the challenge.  You just need to have your projects linked by midnight ET on December 21st. 

This week I have decided to go for silver metallic.  I had been planning to do foil tape covered snowflakes for quite awhile.  Then this week, I visited Stamptramp, Shelly Hickox's blog.  Shelly is doing a 12 Days of Ornaments series and she did one that was a faux galvanized metal surface.  If you don't follow Shelly, you should.  I always say she is the Queen of Faux Finishes.  She has countless tutorials on her blog for faux finishes - all totally amazing.  Anyway, as soon as I saw her fantastic faux galvanized metal, I wanted to try it and since I already had most of the details for this tag worked out, I went for it here.  

Starting with one of the jumbo manila tags I sell at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, I used the Paper Snowflakes thinlits die set to cut light chipboard and affixed the snowflakes to my tag.  Then I carefully adhered the foil sheet and using a stylus with a ball tip, I burnished the snowflakes, getting into all the cracks and crevices to make them stand out.  According to Shelly's directions I lightly sanded the foil tape and dabbed on Brushed Pewter metallic distress paint and when partially dry dabbed on tiny bits of Black Soot distress paint, immediately pouncing it with my finger.  

I'm not sure it really looks like galvanized metal.  Shelly's does, but mine is a little shaky.  But I still think it looks cool.  I didn't do much embellishing because I wanted the snowflakes and faux metal work to be the main focal point.  I used some turquoise gumdrops that I sell at The Funkie Junkie Boutique as well as some turquoise rhinestone embellishments also from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  

I made the sentiment panel the same way and die cut it with one of the new thinlits Labels dies and then using Jet Black Archival ink, stamped the wreath and sentiment from Mini Holidays 5.  

The seam binding and eyelash yarn were dyed with watered down Peacock Feathers distress ink.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas - Funkie Junkie Style - Week #10

Welcome friends and followers!  I hope all my American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving - I did.  Had a lovely day with my mom and dad, brother, daughter and DH.  Our weather has been chilly but dry and sunny - totally a blessing.  And welcome to December and tag #10 of the 12 Tags of Christmas Funkie Junkie Style!  Yes, that's right - it's December and Christmas is officially upon us.  Yesterday I cleared alway all my fall decorations and put up Christmas decorations all around my house  - everything but the tree.  We don't get our tree until about one week before Christmas.

I finished another Christmas tag for your inspiration.  Thank you so much to everyone who is playing along and a special welcome to the new players this week!  I have another style that  I played with this week.  You might recall that I mentioned how much fun I have trying so many different styles with my tags.  A couple of weeks ago, it was homespun.  Last week it was black and gold elegant and this week it's a little on the grungy side.  I have to say that I am totally captivated by Astrid McLean's work with texture paste and spray inks.  If you haven't visited her blog, Astrid's Artistic Efforts, you should!  Every time I go there, there is more amazing artwork to ogle!  

I wanted to try something along that line so I selected a pretty filigree stencil from Prima and grabbed my Ranger embossing paste.  But first, I stenciled the Tim Holtz Holly Bough stencil on the entire tag with Pine Needles distress ink.  Then I stenciled on the embossing paste and let it thoroughly dry.  I got out some spray stains and lightly misted it.  I don't even remember exactly which ones I used, but I know I started with Tarnished Brass over the entire tag.   I added a few squirts of Vintage Photo  and there may have been a quick pump or two of Walnut Stain in the texture paste area.  

I cut a heart out of chipboard (didn't have a die the right size/shape) and gave it two coats of Wendy Veechi's Red Geranium embossing powder and while it was still hot, I inked up Tim Holtz's Fabulous Flourishes stamp with gold ink and stamped into the hot EP.  I embellished the tag with a piece of the Trellis die cut, embossed with Queen's Gold EP as well as the holly from Holiday Greens likewise embossed.  The gumdrops from The Funkie Junkie Boutique (not Tim's, mine are a little smaller) were colorized with Red Pepper alcohol ink. The sentiment panel was gold embossed on vellum.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas - Funkie Junkie Style - Week #9

Hello and welcome to week #9 of the 12 Tags of Christmas Funkie Junkie Style.  We are on the downhill slide now with only four weeks until Christmas.  I hope you are planning to play along.  You can play in any order at any time prior to December 21st.  If you link up all 12 challenges and follow all the challenge requirements found in the Week #1 post, you will be in for the drawing  - 3 gift certificates to The Funkie Junkie Boutique are going to be given away.  In addition, all participants who complete the challenge properly will receive a 10% discount coupon to The Funkie Junkie Boutique to shop in January.  We have had some amazing submissions this year - thank you so much to everyone who has played along!

I have so much fun making the tags each year and love making a variety of styles.  Last week it was homespun and this week I'm going for elegant with a gold and black color palette.  I started with one of the jumbo manila tags that I sell in the boutique.  I don't have them in black so I used black distress paint and painted it with two coats of paint, drying it with a heat tool between painting the two layers.  

Next, using the Tim Holtz Christmas stencil, I stenciled on gold Wendy Vecchi embossing paste.  The edges of the tag were dry brushed with gold acrylic paint dabber.  On a piece of vellum, I stenciled on embossing ink using the Tim Holtz Festive stencil and embossed on Queen's Gold embossing powder.    The edges were ripped and sponged with Vintage Photo DI.  When the gold embossing paste was dry, the vellum was affixed over it using Ranger Multi Medium Matte.  

I haven't used my Snowflake Rosette decorative strip die yet this holiday season and have been wanting to use it.  I wanted the embellishments to be very simple so as not to take away from the two layers of embossing.  I cut the rosette out of white CS, stamped it with the Christmas Carol stamp from Tim's Mini Holidays 3 set, sponged the edges with Vintage Photo and gave it a shot or two of Tarnished Brass Distress Spray Stain.  There are two layers of seals, the bottom one was gold embossed with Queen's Gold EP.  The top one was cut with the Stacked Snowflake die from acrylic packaging and sprayed with Brushed Pewter Distress Spray Stain. I topped it off with a small gumdrop from my shop, which is a bit smaller than the Tim Holtz gumdrops.

The sentiment was made with a stamp from Mini Holidays 5, stamped with embossing ink and embossed with Queen's Gold.  I used selected areas from the Festive Stencil, stenciled on embossing ink and embossed with Queen's Gold.   The panel was cut with the new Labels Thinlits dies.

I dyed the shabby seam binding by scribbling a bit of Tarnished Brass distress stain on my craft sheet and dabbing it in it.
