Altered Metals Part II

Click once to enlarge, twice to get zoom in on details.
Hi gang,

I'm back again with Part II of the Frilly and Funkie Altered Metals challenge.  This week, we're going Funkie and our DT has rocked this challenge!

Oh my, am I ever having fun with these ink sprays and the altered metals!  I've started keeping some jumbo tags within easy reach of my craft desk for times when I have left over inks on my craft sheet.  For this piece, I had used some Vibrant Turquoise (Dylusions spray) and already started to mop up with a paper towel, when I spritzed again and all the lovely turquoise beaded up, I had to grab a tag to capture it.  Same story with the Meadow Adirondack Color Wash spray - that's a really great green and I just love the way I created such a quick and easy background.

I adore altering metals and this piece was an absolute joy to work on.  First I took one of the Vintaj bronze blanks and ran it through one of the new Sizzix Vintaj metal embossing folders, then I painted it with all three of the Vintaj patina paints from the Rusted Hardware collection.  When it dried, I reliefed it with the Vintaj reliefing block.  I really love this piece and want to play around with making some chains and other jewelry type pieces with these heavenly Vintaj metals and patinas.  I have some other blank charms coming into the boutique as well as some chains and jump rings.  Lots of fun creativity opportunities there!

Next I took some umm, not sure what it is, but it's from my local hardware store.  I did play around with rusting it, but it's galvanized and didn't rust well.  So I ended up "rusting" it with Tea Dye Distress Embossing Powder and than dabbed some of the blue paint on it from the Weathered Copper patinas (sorry, not in the store at this time - on back order from Ranger :(  Using the same Weathered Copper patinas, I painted the filigree butterfly and brads.  However once they were painted and dried, they were too blue green and I felt like they should have some copper "showing" through (of course there was no copper to begin with).  So I went back to the Rusted Hardware patina paints and sort of dry brushed over the blue-green with a little rusty look - it made a huge difference in the final piece.

Hope you like my little altered metal experimentations.  I'd love to see what you can do with altering metals.  Hope you will stop by Frilly and Funkie to see what the other designers have to share!

Celebrating Summertime

Hello and thanks for stopping by this Sunday morning.  I'm back today with a jumbo tag I made for no other reason than just to celebrate summertime and, of course, to play in Linda Ledbetter's Compendium of Curiosities 2 challenge #13 of Spritz and Flick.   This week, the challenge is sponsored by Simon Says Stamp with an awesome $25 shopping spree!

With Jet Black Archival Ink, on one of the jumbo tags I sell in the boutique, I stamped the stamps from Keeper, one of my all time Artistic Outpost favs.  I sponged the background with several distress inks (Scattered Straw, Stormy Sky and Dried Marigold) to give a feel of a summer evening sky.  The word "summer" was cut with the Word Play die from corrugated cardboard which I then partially coated with UTEE.  The tiny flowers were cut with the Tattered Flowers Decorative Strip die and colored with Dried Marigold and Mustard Seed.  The young lady was stamped on Ranger Manila CS  and cut with a Spellbinders die.  Then the tag was dreged through a puddle of Denim Color Wash and water.  Everything was edged with Vintage Photo DI.

Kicking Off Our New Team and a Color Challenge

It's time once again to announce our newest team members over at Our Creative Corner.  We have five talented paper crafters joining the team and I am pleased to share that these artists have honored us by accepting a spot on our design team:

Lisa Minckler - You Made Me Ink
Kim Price - Inkcognito
Paula McClane - Scrap Addict's Attic
Liliana Inguanti - Stampin' From Home

I hope you will stop by their blogs and get to know them.

This week Sharon Wheet is our host again and she has a delightful color challenge for us.  Use navy and pink and one other color of your choice.  However, your added color choice cannot be a neutral such as white, cream, black or brown.
As you can see, for my extra color I chose yellow.  I used an old, old Stampin' Up! stamp from the Tender Toile set, stamped in Cobalt Archival Ink.  I embossed Barely Banana CS with the Regal Flourishes Texture Fade and used the circle Embossing Defuser to create a non-embossed circle to stamp on.  The embossing defusers are interesting tools from the Tim Holtz Alterations/Sizzix line that you can place anywhere to either emboss or not emboss, if that makes sense.  The patterned paper is a digital download from Raspberry Road.  The larger, top heart is a piece of that Pepsi can I used the other day for the flourishes.  I cut it with a Movers and Shapers heart, embossed it with one of the new Vintaj metal embossing folders and then applied Pearl alcohol ink mixative and Watermelon alcohol ink on it.  The same alcohol ink combo was used on the paper Tattered Banner sentiment and the tiny heart and links.

Almost all the products needed to make this card, with the exception of the stamp and the paper, can be purchased in my Funkie Junkie Boutique.  The links are below for ease in locating the items in my boutique.

Thanks so much for stopping by today and for all your lovely comments.  I hope you will take the time to stop by Our Creative Corner and the blogs of our new teamies.  Have a wonderful weekend!

How Many Times Can You Alter a Piece of Metal?

Click photo one time to enlarge, click a second time to zoom in to see the details.

It's no secret that I love altering metals...well, actually I love altering most anything and metals are high on my favorites list.  I'm hosting this fortnight over at Frilly and Funkie and my challenge is to use metals, but the catch is they must be ALTERED.  So I set out to do some altering.  For my first piece, I chose a Tim Holtz Ornate Plate that initially was bronze and painted on Snow Cap alcohol ink mixative.  When dry, I sanded it with the Vintaj reliefing block to give it a worn look.  For my second foray into metal alteration, I cut a Pepsi can (careful of the sharp edges!) with the TH Mini Flourish Movers and Shapers die and then ran it through the Regal Flourishes texture fade.  Okay, here's where my question comes in - how many times can you alter a piece of metal?  For this one, I really didn't know when to quit.  I couldn't get it to look right with the pale vintage palette.  First I broke open a pack of the Vintaj Weathered Copper patinas and painted on all three colors. I thought the greens would give it a greenery feel behind the flowers.  Way too bright, it looked terrific, but just didn't go with this piece.  In an effort to tone it down and make it more vintage looking, I dripped on some Ginger alcohol ink.  Again it looked great, but was still way too bright.  So what do you do when something is too bright?  Paint it with gesso, right?  Out came the gesso and I brushed it on.  Well, it did tone it down but it still didn't please me.  Okay, one last try before I chuck these things in the trash, I thought.  This time I embossed it with the Enamelware EP that I love so much and well, I'd like to say that the third time's a charm, but actually that was the fourth time.  And it was a charm.  That did it for me.  I like the variegated look the Enamelware EP gave it and the colors are muted enough to compliment this theme and the palette of the piece.  So there you have it - the flourishes are a little green, a little brown, a little white and spotty and dotty :)

And just a few deets on the rest of this card.  I selected a beautiful piece of designer paper from the Pion Fairy Tale of Spring set (now sold out in the boutique), then of course I covered the entire piece up.  The vintage floral card is from The Graphics Fairy and both the Thinking of You and the My Friend stamps are done in Coffee Archival ink using the Crafty Secrets Sweet Kids set.  And the two sweet flowers were hand stamped with SU Baja Breeze ink and die cut using the Tattered Pinecones die.  Love the way they came out.  The doily is also from my boutique and I sponged it a bit with Vintage Photo DI to age it a tad.

That's about it.  Thank you so much for stopping by today!  Hope you will be joining us over at Frilly and Funkie this week.  Be sure to stop by to see what the other designers have to get your metal mojo moving.

POST UPDATE:  I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF REQUESTS FOR THE FLORAL EPHEMERA FROM THE GRAPHIC FAIRY.  I'VE NOW PROVIDED A LINK ABOVE FOR YOU TO FIND IT ON HER SITE.
