Cherry Blossom Time

Hello friends and followers, the Frilly team over at  Frilly and Funkie is back today to kick off our latest challenge.  Sue Carrington is our host this fortnight and her challenge is called Winter Blooms.  She wants us to liven up our winter gardens and craft projects with handmade flowers, one of my all time favorite embellishments.  I always make my flowers, cut with dies and card stock, inked and scrunched.  I was definitely in my element with this challenge. 

Last week when the new Tim Holtz stencils came in, I grabbed one of each out of stock for myself and promptly tried each one out with on tags with Tim's texture paste.  This was a blank tag that I had applied Tim's white texture paste through the Blossom stencil, which I can see is going to be a favorite of mine!  I misted it with my new Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays using Whale Watch Blue from the Nantucket Pearl set and while still wet, giving it a squirt of Van Dyke Sepia and a mist of water to help them run together a bit.  I dried them with my heat tool and then took my finger and rubbed over the high points of the embossing paste with another product that is new to the shop - Inka Gold paint in the Old Silver color.  Here's a quick shot I took of the project before I covered everything up.  
Next I stamped the long text stamp from Stuff to Say in jet black archival.  Using the new Mixed Media die, I cut the die cut up top from white card stock, sponged it with Vintage Photo DI and then rubbed Old Gold Viva Decor Inka Gold over it.  The sentiment is a Wendy Vecchi stamp from the Nature's Art set that I really love.  I though it worked perfectly for this piece.  My cherry blossoms and the leaves were cut from white CS with the Tattered Flowers decorative strip die, my main go-to die for making flowers.  I sprayed them with Lindy's Stamp Gang spray Salt Water Taffy, also found in the Nantucket Pearl spray set.  The branches were cut with the Autumn Gatherings decorative strip die and were sponged with Walnut Stain.  For my flowers, I sprayed them liberally with the Lindy's Salt Water Taffy spray,  scrunched then up and dried them like that.  Same with the leaves that were sponged with Cracked Pistachio and also edged with Walnut Stain.  The centers had a drop of green Viva Decor dimensional paint (from my old stash) applied and then the green micro beads were poured on the wet dimensional paint.  
That's pretty much it for this tag.  I love the soft colors from the Lindy's Stamp Gang Nantucket Pearls set.  Ahh, more sprays.  I have really become addicted to sprays!

Valen-twine Two

It's time for the Funkie team from Frilly and Funkie to show off their Valen-twine inspirations for week two of Pamellia's challenge.  This week I had the opportunity to play with some new craft goodies - one of Tim Holtz's new stencils and some Lindy's Stamp Gang Magicals and sprays.  (Lots of new goodies in stock at The Funkie Junkie Boutique for those of you who haven't visited in awhile :)

When the new Tim stencils came in last week, I grabbed some of my jumbo manila tags and used the full stencils and some of Tim's texture paste and cover the full tag.  Once it was dry, I sprayed it with Lindy's Stamp Gang Salt Water Taffey, a pale pink for Valentine's Day.  But it was too pale so I went in another direction and sprayed it good with Treasure Island Aqua and then deepened it a bit with a light mist of Van Dyke Sepia, followed by a light mist of water to dilute it a bit - in other words, I just messed around until I got a look that I liked.  Then I gave it a light wash with the Lindy's Magical Shabby Turbine Teal, mixing just a tiny dot of it with a squirt of water on my kraft sheet and then painting it on.

I used Wendy's new stamp set A Passion for Art, inking up the lace stamp with Jet Black Archival and stamped the lace along the top.  My flower was cut from white card stock using several of the Tattered Florals dies.  The die cut flowers were sprayed with Treasure Island Aqua and a light mist of Van Dyke Sepia.

For my heart, I layered white CS over gray chipboard and hand cut the heart.  Mixing Wendy Vecchi's Translucent Embossing Paste with a tiny dot of the Magical Shabby Turbine Teal, blending and blending with a pallet knife until the color was even.  Then I simply spread the embossing paste on with a pallet knife, roughing it up with little dips and gouges.  I ran out of time and tried to dry it with  my heat gun so it never went translucent - not sure if it would have with the mica powder mixed in.  Once it had dried a bit, I gave it a shot of Van Dyke Sepia and then a mist of water to blend it.  Then sentiment is from A Passion for Art, stamped onto a ticket die cut.

It's Valen-twine's Time

Greetings friends and followers.  We are kicking off a new challenge this week at Frilly and Funkie.  Our hostess is Pamellia and her challenge theme is Valen-Twine.  How fun is that?  And it gives me the perfect excuse to indulge my LOVE of RED!  And isn't this red just yummy?  It has a pink hue to it that I am just loving!

I started out with a jumbo manila tag.  I had been over to Wendy Vecchi's blog and she had a little tutorial on a new technique she just devised that she is calling the splattered plaster technique.  Check it out - it's so cool, super easy and not even messy :)  I followed Wendy's instructions but only used one color of archival ink - her Red Geranium, mixed it with the rubbing alcohol and gave it a nice spritz of Picket Fence Distress Spray Stain.  I stirred it around and sure enough it started curdling.  I smooched my tag in it a couple of times, dried the tag and smooched a couple more times.  It was a little pink so I went over it lightly with a ink blending tool and more Red Geranium ink, then used Tim's heart stencil and additional Red Geranium to stencil on some hearts.  After the tag had dried, I inked up the new Wendy Vecchi Background Stamp - Script with Jet Black archival ink and added vintage style script by rolling the stamp.  That gives it spotty coverage and looks more worn and vintage style.  

The pink flowers and hearts were made the same way only I used more alcohol and less archival ink resulting in pink rather than red.  The flowers were edged with full strength Red Geranium archival ink.  They were cut from white CS using the Tattered Flowers decorative strip die.  I cut three small hearts from Frosted and embossed them with an Texture Fade.  The clear didn't show up so I cut backing hearts fro the same paper that I used to cut the flowers.  I affixed the Frosted over the pink hearts with a new product I saw demonstrated at CHA and ordered for the boutique.   It's by Ken Oliver and it's called StickIt.  You can check out the product and Ken's YouTube video on our shop listing here.

Aren't these little resin heart beads just the cutest?  I actually ordered them just to give away in the Thank You packages that I tuck into each order from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  But I thought they were so sweet that I ordered bunches more and have a fun little Valentine's collection available at the Boutique.  It also includes the sweet pink tiny pearly hearts.  
And then there is that yummy new Mays Art ribbon.  I stopped by the May Arts exhibit at CHA and fell in love with a number of styles of ribbon.  I'm a sucker for ginghams and plaids so I stocked the store up on those as well as some more rustic jute type ribbon.  They came in last week and my mom and I have been in heaven cutting and bundling them all up ready to sell.  And I couldn't resist using one of the great new Small Talk stickers from Tim Holtz Idea-ology.  I sanded the edges to grunge it up a bit.  

To finish it off and break up all that pink/red, I cut some ivy with the Spring Greenery decorative strip die, added Cracked Pistachio ink pad direct to paper onto white CS, spritzed it with Pumice Stone distress spray stain and then gave it a mist of Picket Fence distress spray stain.  It still lacked a little something so I hit it with a pump of Perfect Pearls Heirloom Gold spray mist.  That did it!  I inked the edges a bit with Vintage Photo and it was good to go.  

The Joy was cut with the Holiday Words:  Script die with StickIt on the back of the card stock.  Worked great!  This was such a fun make.  I hope the glorious shade of red made you smile!  Thanks so much for stopping by!
