More Cracked Pistachio Inspired by Tim's January Tag

I'm still loving the new Cracked Pistachio January distress color.  I was fortunate enough to receive some sample products at CHA and have made another tag based on Tim Holtz's January tag.  This time I started with a jumbo manila tag and affixed Melange tissue wrap with Glue 'n Seal as Tim showed in his January tutorial.  Rather than use distress paint, I spritzed on a bit of Cracked Pistachio distress spray stain and a bit of Walnut Stain spray too.  I love the color that resulted, almost olive but with a bit of extra zing to it.  

The trellis die cut was painted black with Black Soot distress paint and then given two coats of UTEE.  I used the trellis cut outs as my glittered embellishment, first painting them with antique linen distress paint and then applying Antique Linen distress glitter using Glossy Accents according to Tim's instructions.  I also used Alpha Parts this time with a smear of Antique Linen distress paint for my year.  The tag was edged with Walnut Stain DI.

I used the fabulous new Small Talk quotes and phrases in place of Tim's Chit Chat stickers and outlined them with a black stabilo pencil, smearing the pencil lines with my finger to create shadows. I added some Botanical Remnant Rubs using Tim's awesome new Remnant Rub tool (available for pre-order at The Funkie Junkie Boutique) and also black butterflies cut with the Butterfly Frenzy die.  And then in keeping with my theme, I boldly added a bright red triple bow made of crinkled seam binding dyed with Post Box Red Dylusions.  

It was fun just having an opportunity to play.  I like this one better than my first January Tim Tag, more feminine I guess :)

January Tim Tag

Hello!  Thanks so much for stopping by today.  I have my Funkie contribution to the Frilly and Funkie challenge Anything Goes.  I am kicking off the year with a determination to play in all of Tim Holtz's monthly challenges this year!  You would think that with a whole month make something that I should be able to join in each month, but I only made four or five monthly challenges in 2014. Since our theme this time at Frilly and Funkie is Anything Goes, I decided to combine my DT piece with Tim's January tag.

I have virtually all the products that Tim used on his tag, but rather than just copy his tag, I prefer to be inspired by his sample and make something of my own design.

I do try to stick with his techniques and this time started with tissue wrap and Glue 'n Seal I had to go a step further and added some white texture paste through the Clockwork stencil.  When dry, I smeared Weathered Wood distress paint over the surfaces.  Two things I can't resist adding these days are texture or embossing paste and distress spray stains!  So I followed up on the distress paint with a couple of spritzes of Vintage Photo spray stain, adding a couple more spritzes of water to make it react and run - love the way it settles into the crevices!

Instead of Alpha Parts, using the Artful Arrows Bigz die, I cut chipboard and painted it with Black Soot distress paint.  When I paint chipboard I like to take a paintbrush and go along the edges and get into all the nooks and crannies so no gray shows.  Once the paint was dry, I gave each piece two coats of Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE) and voilà!   It looks like black plastic Alpha Parts.  I started to add Tarnished Brass distress paint like Tim did, but the color clashed badly with my base colors so I wiped it off before it dried and went with Brushed Pewter, using the same method as Tim.

Chipboard was cut with the Word Play die, colored with Brushed Pewter stain and then Pumice Stone distress glitter was applied.  Rather than use Chit Chat stickers, I chose to leave my piece less cluttered and made two simple sentiment labels using the Labels Thinlits dies and the #hashtags stamp set.  It was finished off by flicking a little Picket Fence distress stain all over it with a paint brush.
