The DT Piece That Wasn't

Good Saturday morning to you!  Thanks so much for stopping in to see what I made this week for the challenge at Our Creative Corner.  Unfortunately, you won't see this card on the challenge blog today because I messed up and didn't follow the challenge requirements.  Our lovely hostess, Vicki Burdick has given us a paper piecing challenge, which I did but the twist is no ribbon and only one (yes, that's right, only one embellishment).  Oops, I guess this card doesn't fit the challenge requirements.  I was so fixated on the paper piecing part that it totally slipped my mind about the other requirements so I went my merry way throwing embellishments on by the handful.  I had it all finished, photographed and loaded onto the team blog yesterday before I realized my mistake.  Oh well, maybe I can find other challenges to play in this week.

Here's the deets and I've linked up the products  below, many of which are from my Etsy boutique because I sell what I enjoy using for my crafting.

The paper is old, old Stampin' Up DP which I love and use very sparingly.  My paper piecing is on the Wendy Vecchi stamped heart from the Love to Make Art set, paper pieced using papers from the same DP set and trimmed out.  I die cut white corrugated cardboard with two Sizzix dies -  Hearts, Primitive #3 and Tags, Scalloped Combo #2 and edged them with Metallic Gold Acrylic Paint Dabber.  Then I added a little red tri-bud applique.  I cut another smaller tag and overlaid it, stamping it with a sentiment from the Tim Holtz Stuff to Say set.  The flower was cut with the Sizzix Flowers & Vines #2 die and the pleated ribbon by May Arts and sold in my Etsy shop.  The metal filigree, also from my shop, was coated with white embossing powder and heat embossed for a worn enamel look.  Oh, and the sweet red burlap thread is also from the Etsy shop.

Wonderful Windows

Good Saturday morning my blogging friends!  Hope your weekend is off to a great start.  I'm feeling rather poorly myself, having come down with a cold/flu type of deal on Friday so I'm hoping to be able to squeeze in a bit of rest this weekend - amongst my crafting and ministry work at church.

Our challenge this week at Our Creative Corner was set by our hostess Holly and is called Wonderful Windows. Wooeee, this was a tough one for me!  I'm not too fond of window cards because they are so fussy and take so long to make, not to mention how tough they are to photograph! That said, I am very happy with the results of my labor.   As you can see, I wanted to work in some yellow crinkled seam binding, but there was no room for a large floppy bow so I ended up weaving it in and out of the filigree metal.  I like the way it looks!

Details for the front of the card - Chocolate Chip outer shell, then a layer of whisper white stamped in Ranger Archival Black with a Tim Holtz (Christmas) music stamp then sponged with Scattered Straw and Vintage Photo.  The checkered paper is from Raspberry Roads but I changed the color from light blue to the garden green shade I had in mind to go with the sunflowers.

The window was cut with a Spellbinders label die and I used the music stamp plus an Artistic Outpost postcard stamp on the inside.  My sunflower was cut from crinoline with the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die and dyed with Summer Sun reinker.  The leaves were cut from canvas with the Tim Holtz Tattered Leaves die and dyed with Garden Green reinker.  The ledger paper is also (digital) from Raspberry Road.  

I made up a little embellishment kit with the crinoline sunflowers and am offering it in my Etsy boutique.  I listed 5 but if they are sold out, come back later and I'll list more.  If you don't see them listed and are interested, email me at thefunkiejunkie@gmail.com and I'll let you know the availability of additional kits.

Challenge: Copehagen

Over at Our Creative Corner, we are trying to come up with unique and interesting challenges and this week Kristin Tierney has excelled in that endeavor!  She wants us to make a project inspired by the city of Copenhagen.  Here is the inspiration photo she has provided.  But wait - there's more.  You can't use designer paper - you have to make your own background paper.  

I took my inspiration from the photo on the bottom left.  When I first started thinking about Copenhagen, I remembered the famous statue of Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid in the harbor.  I looked for vintage mermaid images but couldn't find one that I was happy with.  However, I did just get another wonderful Artistic Outpost set called Beyond the Sea and thought that would be perfect for the sea/harbor aspect of Copenhagen.

My colors were drawn from the photo and I mainly used Weathered Wood and Vintage Photo distress inks.  This set has a lot of stamps so I basically stamped a collage pattern on Very Vanilla in Weathered Wood and then ink distressed it with Vintage Photo.  A chipboard circle was created with Spellbinders dies, sea images were stamped in Vintage Photo, inked with Weathered Wood -  and then spattered with water droplets.  The main image was stamped on Very Vanilla with Ranger Jet Black Archival Ink and spritzed with my Vintage Photo glimmer mist.  I made a kraft ruffle using the Paper Twist Ribbon that is sold in my Etsy shop.  The sentiment, which I really love, was stamped on Very Vanilla with the Ranger archival ink.

I freehand cut a banner and distressed the edges with Vintage Photo.  Then I gave it one layer of UTEE.  When it was hardened, Vintage Photo was sponged into all the cracks where the UTEE didn't cover.  It gave it a cool distressed look, while still being shinny from the UTEE.  It didn't seem quite finished so I added some filigree metal from my Etsy shop.  I haven't used the metals too much but am finding that I really like using them.  I have some left in the shop and have more on order.  I'm slowly trying to increase the variety that I can offer in the shop.

This was another great challenge.  I really had fun with what I made - I'm not sure for whom it can be used, but I like the color palette and design of it.  I hope you will be stopping by Our Creative Corner and joining in the fun with us this week.

It's a White Party!

This week we have such a cool challenge at Our Creative Corner.  Our hostess is Kristin Tierney and she is challenging us to use only white in our creation this week.  Don't worry that it will look flat.  You can enhance it with textures and patterns.  Here is an inspiration photo to get you started.

I decided to make a wall hanging instead of a card this week. (don't forget, if you click once on the photo of my wallhanging, it will open up a larger version so you can see the details.  Click again and it becomes even larger. )  I started with a square 12x12" cream colored doily and cut 3 of the 4 corners off, then reattached one of the corners to the top of my piece.  I mounted the doily on a piece of white card stock.  I wanted to mount the piece on corrugated cardboard but it needed to be white so I painted it completely with white acrylic paint.  The corrugated cardboard I sell in my Etsy shop is flexible and lightweight so I mounted it on a piece of cardboard for strength and stability. 

 

The lace and applique were dyed in a very weak tea solution, to just give them an ivory tint.  The crinoline for the flower was dyed in a tea solution also, just a bit stronger than the lace.  

I added a Spellbinders die cut, a sentiment panel and a piece of bronze metal that I white embossed.  I also embossed the large metal filigree at the bottom.  It was originally bright brass.

I turned it upside down and smooshed it into a craft white ink pad and then embossed it with white embossing powder.  

I love the enameled look that the embossing powder gives.

More Father's Day Art

I had so much fun making the wall hanging for my dad for Father's Day that I decided to do something similar for my husband's step-father.  Rather than using a book cover, for this one I used a piece of the corrugated cardboard from my Etsy shop.  This cardboard is flexible so I glued it to a same-sized piece of chipboard for stability.  I used my finger to smear some gesso up and down it for a whitewashed look and when dry, inked the edges with Vintage Photo distress ink.  I stamped the larger of the two Book Covers stamps with Brushed Corduroy onto kraft CS.  The vintage sales receipt is from Curiosities, stamped in black archival ink onto white copy paper and then ripped and ink distressed with Vintage Photo.  Again, the same for the auto panel, but onto kraft instead of white.  The sentiment had the same treatment as the sales receipt.  I ripped and crumpled up a strip of Tim Holtz Kraft Glassine paper, sort of pleated it and ran a straight stitch across it  The vintage keys came from my stash.  I have pile of old keys and was lucky enough to actually find an automobile key.  The piece of filigree metal is from my Etsy shop as re the small brass flowers.  A couple of scraps of black grosgrain ribbon and a vintage button topped of the piece.
