A Steampunk Snowman

Hi everyone, I'm back for week #2 of Sue's Christmas preparations challenge over at Frilly and Funkie.  It's the Funkie week and I guess I'm stuck on Steampunk since I made the Steampunk Stocking last week for the Our Creative Corner DT make.  Sue's challenge to us is to make some sort of Christmas decoration that will go on your Christmas table or Christmas tree.  I made another tree ornament using the Layered Wings die.  This time they are metallic wings attached to my little steam punk snowman.  The metal work is all done with Ranger foil tape.  The wings were also put through the matching texture fade to give them the feathered look.  Once all my foil tape was in place and either embossed or marked up with industrial type markings, I gave it all a coat of black acrylic paint, let it dry almost all the way and then wiped it off.  The holly leaves were made the same way but after  rubbing off the black paint, I dripped Meadow alcohol ink on them to give some green color.  I started to apply silver colored cogs, but they just faded into the silver background so I switched to the gold tones.  I made the holly berries with an old tube of some sort of silvery pearl making stuff, sort of a precursor to Liquid Pearls and when dry, colored them red with a Copic marker.  A little bit of Tim Holtz black tinsel twine made up the snowman's scarf.

That's my ornament for the Funkie week.  I had about a dozen ornament ideas floating around in my head and had hoped to make a couple for each of the challenge weeks, but just ran out of time.  Maybe things will hit a lull in a couple of weeks and I can focus more on crafting - I hope :)

Steampunk Christmas Stocking

Hi there - welcome to my mid-month post for Our Creative Corner.  We have month-long challenges there and I'm on the B team which publishes on the 15th of the month.  Claudia is our hostess this month and she has given us a Steampunk Tic Tac Toe.  You can stop by the blog and get all the details here.  I used the middle horizontal line - Flourish - Texture - Heart.

Steampunk is not something I excel at and I was quite challenged to come up with a design idea for my sample.  I Googled Steampunk and looked at a number of photo when it dawned on me that you can basically steampunk anything - just add gears - LOL.  And since I am moving into full holiday mode, I decided to make my project a Steampunk Christmas Stocking.

I started by printing out a stocking pattern from the internet and traced it onto a sheet of Maja Designs It's Christmastime paper.  For the heel and toe, I cut the flourish and the holly leaves from card stock with the Festive Greenery die.  I glued the CS pieces onto another piece of CS and applied Ranger foil tape over them.  Using a paper stub I went around all the edges and pressed the foil down around the base of the die cuts so they would really stand out.  Then I added some scribbles done with the sharp led of a mechanical pencil  I gave both a good coat of Pitch Black acrylic paint and when about half dry, I wiped off as much of the paint as I could with a paper towel.   The three gears were cut with the Tim Holtz Gadget Gears die. I know it's hard to see but there is a Tim Holtz Mini Snowflake layered over the smallest gear with a tiny heart on top.  The middle gear has a Spellbinders snowflake layered over it.  All the gears and snowflakes have had Ranger Foil Tape applied to them.  On both of those gears and snowflakes, I freehanded some industrial type markings with a pencil (the lead needs to be very sharp to make the marks in the foil tape - I used a mechanical pencil).  And then, of course, I used the black acrylic paint to tarnish them up.

Since my Tic-Tac-Toe line included a heart, I had to come up with some sort of a heart to add.  I didn't have any heart embossing folders and couldn't come up with a metal-like design for one but I did have a favorite Stampin' Up heart stamp.  I used embossing ink to stamp the image on the foil tape and heat set it.  That gave me the metal-like texture I was looking for and I again used the black acrylic paint to created a tarnished look.  It's not a perfect embossed metal look, but I deemed it close enough to go with.

The cuff of the stocking was embossed with the Tim Holtz Riveted texture fade, adding some scribbling for more texture and black paint for tarnish.

And that's my foray into Steampunk.  I think Steampunk is extremely cool.  There are some amazing examples on the Internet.  I enjoyed looking at them and creating the stocking was fun too.  Thanks to Claudia for giving me a push to step out of my comfort zone into something new!  Be sure to stop over to Our Creative Corner to see what the other designers have to share!

Steampunk Easter Bonnet

Hi friends and followers!  Hope you are all well.  Thanks so much for stopping off to see what I have made for week 2/Funkie week at Frilly and Funkie.  Rebecca's challenge is Easter/Spring gifts - but not in a basket, so I put mine in a hat.  Not just any hat, but my take on a spring inspired steampunk top hat.

I found a top hat pattern on line, but unfortunately I didn't save the URL so I can't direct you to it.  It was too small, like a party table favor and I spent quite a bit of time working on my computer/printer to enlarge the pattern pieces.  Once I got the sizes right, I traced it onto black CS and then did Tim's riveted metal technique to the main body of the hat.  I used 1/4" Wonder Tape to assemble the pieces.  Because I wanted the Easter bonnet feel to it, I made my gears pastel, cutting them from brown chipboard, painting them with white gesso and and then dabbing with distress stains in Squeezed Lemonade, Peacock Feathers, Picked Raspberry and Dried Marigold.  I sprinkled them with Rock Candy Distress Glitter while the gesso was still dry.

The flowers were made with the Tattered Pinecone die and the edging was cut with the Vintage Lace die from white CS.  I stained it with Dusty Concord stain and then used Enameled DP on it.  The lace edging and the flowers were glued on with Claudine Helmuth's Multi Medium Matte.

The large purple flower was actually left over from my egg carton make last week.  I didn't use it then, but it just seemed to fit into my Easter bonnet.  It was cut from white CS with the Tattered Florals die, sponged with Dusty Concord distress ink and also coated with Enameled EP.  The egg picks were purchased - I wasn't up for making everything :)

Just a Little Steampunk

The early century feel of the Paperboy plate put me in a steampunk mood for this tag.  Starting with a jumbo manila tag, I sponged and stained it with Antique Linen and Vintage Photo distress inks to create a vintage feel.  A piece of foil tape covered card stock was cut with the ticket die and then run through the Riveted texture fade.  The ticket was then painted with Pitch Black acrylic paint, allowed to partially dry and then rubbed off with a paper towel, leaving some black paint in the cracks.  The gears were cut from card stock, painted with Espresso alcohol ink and clear embossed.  The stamping was done with archival inks, either Sepia or Jet Black.  The background on the front flap of the folded tag is from the Industrial Background plate.   The upper fold of the inside of the tag was stamped with images from the Paperboy plate and on the bottom the newspaper from Charles and Amelia was used.  The paperboy was stamped on a separate piece of card stock, trimmed out and popped up for dimension.  

My hanger is ball chain and I kept the tag closed with a mini paper clip.  Such a fun set to get grungy with!
