Alter It!

Hello blogging friends and welcome new followers!  So happy to have you stop by today.  It's time for our fortnightly challenge at Frilly and Funkie and for this challenge Sue Carrington is our host.  Sue has challenged us to Alter It!  In the past, such a challenge would have had me running off into the sunset screaming in fright, but I have become much more comfortable with making non-card types of crafts.   But I didn't have a clue what to alter until a couple of days ago when I used the last of the eggs in this half dozen paper egg carton and was about to toss it into the recycling.  I buy organic, cage free chicken eggs and love that they come in the old fashioned paper cartons.  I always hate to toss them and keep thinking that one of these days I would use one to do an altered project.

I spent a lot of time fussing around with this starting with the straight paper lace doily.  These doilies are wonderful but they are stark pure white and I wanted something a little more aged looking so I took an empty mini mister, pried the dispenser lid off my Antique Linen Distress Stains and poured some into the mini mister - filled it about 1/4 full.  Then I took my bottle of Perfect Pearls Biscotti, shook it up real good and gave it about 4 squirts into the mini mister thus creating a shimmery Antique Linen spra.  I sprayed both pieces of the white doily - ooh yum, what a gorgeous result (at least I thought so :).  It's a little blotchy, darker in some areas that more ink settled into, just the way I like it. The doily was affixed with Claudine Hellmuth's Multi Medium Matte - love it for things with holes like the doily because it dies clear and totally invisible.  I sponged a narrow strip of white corrugated cardboard with Antique Photo DI and ran it from one end to the other.  Using the TH Baroque die, I cut two pieces of chipboard and glued them together, then gave it a good thick coat of Picket Fence distress crackle paint. When dry, I sponged the edges with Vintage Photo DI and then give it two coats of UTEE because it started to flake on me.  Anyone else have a problem with the crackle paint flaking off?

My flower is made from regular natural colored canvas cut with the TH Tattered Pinecones die.  It was colored with Faded Jeans Color Wash spray that I diluted a bit by spritzing the canvas with water before I dried it with my heat tool.  Once dry, I rolled it up into a rose.  The leaves were cut with the Tattered Leaves die and colored with Bundled Sage distress stain.  The leaves were rather large so I cut them down a bit with scissors, following the shape of the die cut.  The sewing embellishments are from my Funkie Junkie Boutique.  They are charms but I took my wire cutters and snipped off the jewelry loops.  The sweet floral button is also for sale in my Funkie Junkie Boutique.  I finished the top of the lid off with a strip of lace from the Vintage Lace decorative strip die and a lock face from the Idea-ology Locket Keys set.

I created a little vintage graphic by digitally layering the Coats and Clarks ad over a vintage postcard and printed it on my printer.  The Coats and Clarks ad is from The Graphic Fairy.  I don't remember where the post card came from.  I stained 6 vintage style wooden spools and made thread labels with Tim Holtz's Haberdashery stamp set, which I am trying to get for the boutique, but it is on back order right now.  The set has two different spool label stamps and I used each 3 times but tried to make them all look different.  Then I dyed seam binding with a variety of Distress Reinkers:  Antique Linen, Milled Lavender, Vintage Photo, Faded Jeans and Bundled Sage.  So now I have some pretty vintage style ribbon ready to go, stored in a shabby little egg carton.

That about wraps up my shabby project for Frilly and Funkie this time.  This is the Frilly week, but you can join in the challenge with any vintage style any time during the two weeks the challege is open.  We hope you will go alter something and share it with us at Frilly and Funkie.  And I hope you will stop by the challenge blog and the blogs of the design team members.  Lots of great eye candy to be seen this week!

Thanks so much for stopping by.  If you have questions, just leave them in the comments.
