Freedom Forever

Double click any image to zoom in for details
Okay, so here we go with round two of the Frilly and Funkie challenge Summer - sharing what we love about the good ole summertime. This is also my take on Tim Holtz's June tag.  It's no secret that I love vintage Americana 4th of July art and that is what I chose for the subject of my Funkie make for this challenge.  You can see what the rest of the DT love about summertime over at Frilly and Funkie.

I started with the technique that Tim Holtz showed for his June tag - plaid made with the stripes stencil.  I didn't do the whole DIY pad thing with the ombre effect but rather just dragged my Festive Berries pad across the stencil a few times, misted, laid it over the tag and burnished it.  I did it again with Faded Jeans in the opposite direction.  Then the tag was edged with Vintage Photo.  I almost stopped there and said okay, I'm done - I loved the effect so much!  But I forged onward with the embellishments.

Sizzix has had the Old Glory die, the Mini Movers and Shapers Old Glory and the Americana Backgrounds and Borders Texture Fades on close out to their wholesalers.  I grabbed a bunch for the shop and have been selling them in a bundle - the three pieces plus a 2.5 yard piece of my hand dyed red white and blue seam binding - $16.99 for the entire four piece set.  Well of course, it sold out in the first day in the shop :)  I was able to get another lot of these products and they will be in on Friday.  You can order them here.  And really - the whole bundle for $16.99 plus S&H, how an you say no?  You can also purchase 5 yards of the hand dyed red, white and blue seam binding separately if you wish.
Of course I had to grab a bundle for myself and my tag is the result.  I cut the flag from the Bigz die from white CS and colored it red and blue.  The flagpole was done with Ink Gold Old Gold, applied with my finger.

I created a small tag by applying Multi Medium Matte to a pice of white CS and laying down a layer of cheese cloth.  I know Tim used burlap for his, but I wanted to change it up a bit.  This was cut with the Tiny Tabs and Tags die and edged with Vintage Photo. Then, using Tim's Stars stencil, I added stars using white Texture Paste.

The sentiment is from the Simple Sayings set stamped on velum with Cobalt Archival Ink and affixed with Tiny Attacher staples.  The hand dyed seam binding was made into a triple loop bow and glued rather than tied to the tag.
I couldn't resist running a row of rustic style red stitching across the stars that were also die cut from the Bigz die.  I used a couple of rub ons from the Air Mail pack to add a bit more interest.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.  Be sure to order your Special Purchase Patriotic die and texture fade set today.  This next batch is likely to sell out quickly too.

This tag is entered into the Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2015 - June challenge.

It's Summer!

It sure is!  At least here in north Florida, it's been HOT!  We are sweltering in the high 90's this week.  Our hostess this week over at Frilly and Funkie is Nancy Dynes.  Here is what she had to say about the challenge.  "Let us know what you love about Summer. Do you enjoy traveling, growing a garden, or laying on the beach? Create a vintage or shabby chic project, card, or layout showcasing what you enjoy most about this wonderful season."

I normally love the summer, but not quite as hot as it has been here in Gainesville.  My tag was meant to give the impression a hot summer garden, a few green leaves, flowers and butterfly.  I started with a pre-made tag background that i made when I was playing around with the Ken Oliver Color bursts. Love the way the colors ran and bled on this tag.  I stamped it lightly with the Wendy Vecchi script stamp and Jet Black archival.  I used the Tim Holtz Valentine stencil and put down  a layer of Ranger Texture Paste.  When it was dry, I lightly rubbed some Inka Gold Old Silver over the raised portion of the texture paste as well as over the Spellbinders die cut.

The flowers were cut from white CS with the Tattered flower Garland strip die and colored with Milled Lavender.  The leaves were cut with the Spring greenery die from white CS.  The leaves were also lightly stamped with the script stamp and I rubbed Inka Gold Old Gold very lightly over it.

The butterfly was also cut from a piece of card stock that I used to mess around with the Color Bursts.  I stamped it with the butterfly from Limitations and die cut it with the die that comes with the set.  Micro beads make up the butterfly body and more Inka Gold Old Gold was lightly rubbed around the edges.

That's it for my frilly little garden piece this week.  The supply list is below and you can purchase all the supplies from my shop, The Funkie Junkie Boutique, at 20% below MSRP.

I hope you will come and play with us over at Frilly and Funkie. We would love to see your artistic interpretation of what you love about summer.  And you may just end up as a winner, a guest designer or win a $25 gift certificate from The Funkie Junkie Boutique!

It's Green! (Monochromatic Too :)

This one ought to blast you awake!  It's my Funkie week monochromatic make for our Frilly and Funkie challenge.  I was actually planning to go with yellows, but when I saw what my teammies had made (yellows/browns) I decided I needed to go in a different direction.  I first used the new Tiles stencil and white Ranger embossing paste to lay down the back layer.  When it was dry, I painted on the greens.  I was going for sort of an ombre effect without doing it with a DIY pad.  I made a separate wash with four distress greens (Forest Moss, Peeled Paint, Mowed Lawn, Twisted Citron) and painted diagonal wavy stripes with each color.  It wasn't quite grungy enough so I loaded up my paintbrush with the Forest Moss wash and gave it a few spatters.  I meant to take a picture before I covered it all up, but darn, missed that opportunity.  While I had the four washes on my craft sheet, I used the paint brush to color the leaves which were cut from white CS with the Spring Greenery decorative strip die.  My crazy birds were stamped with Forest Moss onto watercolor paper and likewise colored.

I hand cut the grass, colored it with Mowed Lawn (of course :) and sewed it onto the tag.  The banner was cut freehand from Tissue Wrap and a sentiment from Small Talk was adhered.  I took my finger and smeared a little Forest Moss DI on the Small Talk stickers.  My tiny dragon flies were painted with Twisted Citron distress paint and my originally silver tone filigree was embossed with Wendy Vecchi's Fern Green embossing powder.  The gumdrop was tinted with a drop of Twisted Citron reinker.

I definitely had a blast getting inky with this one!  These crazy birds are so dang cute!  Hope you will join us for the last week of our monochromatic challenge over at Frilly and Funkie.
