January Tim Tag - Steampunk Flower

Whew, I can't believe it's the end of January already!  I have been incredibly busy with all the new CHA pre-order listings over at The Funkie Junkie Boutique and I almost missed playing in Tim Holtz's January tag challenge.  Here's my take on Tim's inspiration.  I never like to copy what he does, but rather take various elements for my inspiration and then go my own way.  I hope that's acceptable.  I followed his base process, using Faded Jeans Distress Stain and then stenciled using the new Doily stencil and silver ink.  I used Remnant Rub numbers, same as Tim did and this time I sanded them very gingerly, especially since they didn't really want to stick to the silver ink.  It all worked out just fine.

Instead of making a steampunk watch, I opted for a steampunk flower and leaf spray.  I cut my flower layers using the new Jumbo Tattered Florals for the largest one and also the regular Bigz Tattered Florals.  I adhered Ranger Foil Tape to card stock and then die cut the flowers.  I used the same Texture Fade that Tim used - the Gears texture fade and ran the die cut flowers through it.  Once embossed, I painted them with Pitch Black paint dabber, let it partially dry and then rubbed it off with a paper tower.  Same process for the leaves using the new Bigz Garden Greens die.

I cut my own ticket, rather than using one of the Idea-ology ones, using the ticket die, swabbed it with Brushed Pewter DS and then stenciled the doily stencil using Faded Jeans DI.  I hit it with my heat tool to make sure it was dry, edged it with Walnut Stain DI and then adhered the sentiment.  The key is from Idea-ology and the butterfly is a silver tone one from my shop.  I roughed it up a bit with sandpaper and then painted it with Pitch Black paint dabber and rubbed it off again when it was almost dry.

Hello and welcome back!  Today I'm sharing a DT project for Frilly and Funkie.  Our hostess Cec has a positively wicked challenge - she wants us to make a Valentine project in traditional Valentine's colors of red, pink and white but NO HEARTS! What, no hearts? The design team rose to the challenge, despite our strong urges to add hearts.  I fought through the challenge and here is my heartless Valentine.    I started with a piece of white CS and using the new Tim Holtz Latticework stencil, I stenciled the CS with Vermillion archival ink.  Wow, what a pretty stencil, huh?  Because I was using red and white, I cut a white top for my normal jumbo manila tag and overlaid the tag with it.  Of course, I had to lightly sponge all edges with Vintage Photo DI.  

Then I went to town with handmade paper flowers and a vintage image to bring in the required pink.  In the mess on my desk I had the "from the heart" tag left over from a prior project and found a home for it here.  I cut some ribbon flags with a decorative strip die and stamped with the Tim Holtz Worn Text stamps to spell out LOVE.  I topped the doily off with a rhinestone ribbon slide and a little bow of red and white paper twist.

Layers of the Heart

Heartwarming Encouragement

Hi there, I'm back with my week 2 piece for Frilly and Funkie.  This is for Rebecca's Warmth of Winter challenge where she asks us to she asks us to warm the winter chill by creating something that will bring warmth to the heart of a friend.  What is more heartwarming that the encouragement to have faith in oneself?  

I'm still wanting to play with Wendy Vecchi's new technique of creating a watercolor feel with archival in reinkers and rubbing alcohol.  I still wanted a little winter feel to the project so I went with icy blue for my main color.  I used Cornflower Blue with just a very little drop of Orange Blossom mixed in.  If you haven't seen Wendy's demo from CHA, you can view it here.  

Starting with half a sheet of Ranger's Specialty Stamping Paper, I created the drippy background according to Wendy's demo and then stamped from a number of different stamp sets with Jet Black archival ink.  The stenciling is also done with the same ink. 

Two lessons learned:  1) dry your archival ink with a heat tool because it doesn't dry well on the specialty stamping paper which makes smearing likely as you continue to work on your project and 2) do not try to touch up your background after stamping with archival ink.  The alcohol makes the ink run (ask me how I know that - duh, I tried to intensify the blue a bit on my first version which dissolved and ran the black ink).

The leaves were cut from plain gray chipboard using the new Tim Holtz Alterations Garden Greens Bigz die (I still have a few in stock and have a few more on order but they are going fast!).   I painted the chipboard with Picket Fence Distress Paint and when dry, stamped it and then sponged it with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  

For the large handmade flower, the bottom two layers were cut with the new Jumbo Tattered Florals XL die and the rest of the flower was cut with the Tattered Florals die and also some of the very small flowers with the Tattered Flowers Decorative Strip dies.  They are white CS colored with Scattered Straw Distress Stain and edged with Vintage Photo DI.  I did use a couple of TH rub-ons right under the distressed doily die cut.  

This was a fun make.  I really enjoyed playing with all my Wendy Vecchi stamps, stencils and ink!  I hope you will stop by Frilly and Funkie to see the rest of the amazing DT's projects!
